The hack failed, the secret email systems were not penetrated by the hackers.
Officials familiar with the situation told the New York Times about the attempted hacking of the United States State Department's e-mail account.
The newspaper specifies that the attempt to attack the e-mail was made by Chinese hackers a few weeks before U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken's June trip to Beijing. They tried to infiltrate the accounts of certain department employees. This was discovered on June 16.
The hack, which began in May, failed. The hackers have been linked to China's military or Chinese intelligence. The investigation is ongoing.
Earlier it became known about a cyberattack on Russian organizations.
