It is assumed to be a more contagious strain of coronavirus that can overcome human immunity to this infection.
Health Canada has reported the first cases of infection in the country with a new subspecies of the Omicron strain BA.2.75, CTV reported Tuesday, July 12.
The agency specified that five people have been identified in whom this strain of coronavirus was tentatively detected. However, the number of those infected may be higher as research continues.
It is not reported how BA.2.75 came to Canada, or whether it was imported or introduced domestically. There is also no information on who this coronavirus subvariant has been detected in.
Note that a similar strain of Omicron has previously been detected in Australia, the United Kingdom, Germany, New Zealand, and the United States.
