He is now on a hunger strike.
Former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas, detained in the Mexican embassy where he sought asylum, tried to commit suicide and is now on hunger strike. This was announced by former president Rafael Correa.
He explained that on April 8, it became known about the emergency hospitalization of Glas, but lawyers and relatives were not explained the reason. Now, however, they have been able to contact Jorge Glas through Zoom.
"We have confirmed that the medical emergency was a suicide attempt. He is not eating anything and is on hunger strike," Correa wrote on social network X.
He accused Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa of the crime and held him responsible for Glas' moral and physical safety.
On April 9, Glas was transferred back from the hospital to a maximum security prison.
Recall, Jorge Glas was detained by Ecuadorian police on April 6 at the Mexican Embassy in Quito. He took refuge there since December 2023. The authorities of Mexico on April 5 granted him political asylum. The next day, security forces stormed the Mexican embassy.
Mexico announced the severance of relations with Ecuador due to the gross violation of diplomatic immunity.
