According to the IDF, some 50,000 civilians have fled to the southern parts of the enclave.
During a media briefing, IDF Spokesman Daniel Hagari said that formations of the Palestinian radical group Hamas no longer control the northern part of the Gaza Strip.
He said some 50,000 residents have left for the enclave's safe southern areas because they realize that the radicals no longer control the territories in the north.
"There is a safer area in the south where medicine, food and water are supplied," Hagari explained.
Earlier, the Israel Defense Forces press service reported that Major General Yaron Finkelman, who heads the IDF's Southern Command, said there was fighting in the "heart" of the enclave's largest city.
In turn, representatives of the military wing of the Palestinian radical group Hamas "Al-Qassam Brigades" said that rocket attacks were carried out on Tel Aviv as a response to the actions of the Israel Defense Forces in the Gaza Strip.
