Pope Francis underwent successful surgery at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome on Wednesday afternoon, June 7. The pontiff is now in his room after three hours of bowel surgery, RaiNews24 television reported.

On the morning before the surgery, Francis held his traditional general audience at the Vatican. He blessed the faithful who had gathered in St. Peter's Square.

Surgeons performed a "laparotomy and prosthetic abdominal wall plasty" on the pontiff. As the experts explained, the pope was eliminated a hernia that had formed on a scar after an operation performed in the summer of 2021. Francis will stay in the clinic for a few more days to fully recover.

The prefecture of the Papal House earlier made a statement that all audiences for the Pope have been cancelled until June 18.
