After Russia suspended the intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in the fishing of marine living resources, Tokyo will continue to consult with Moscow. A Foreign Ministry spokesman informed NHK in an interview.

In his opinion, the decision of Russia can be called "extremely regrettable". The representative of the Japanese Foreign Ministry believes that the signing of the document on technical assistance to Sakhalin Region was a prerequisite for fulfilling the provisions of the treaty.

According to the Foreign Ministry's spokesman, Japan intends to continue consultations with the Russian side to ensure that Japan has the opportunity to continue working within the framework of the agreement. He said that representatives of the Fisheries Administration confirmed the situation through the country's Foreign Ministry.

Recall that the Russian Foreign Ministry reported the suspension of the agreement with Japan on cooperation in the fishing of marine living resources on Tuesday, June 7. This happened because Japan froze the payments due under the agreement. The agreement was concluded in 1998.
