On May 6, Mertz failed to get the necessary number of votes to be confirmed as chancellor in the first round of voting. Then he was supported by 310 deputies, while 316 votes were required to win. Merz's failure in the first round of voting in the Bundestag had a negative impact on the German stock market.

Initially there were reports that Merz had refused to hold a second round on May 6, which, according to Bild, deprived Germany of the possibility of getting a new chancellor. However, Jens Spahn, head of the CDU/CSU faction, later assured that the runoff vote would still take place on May 6.

Earlier, representatives of the Alternative for Germany (AdG) party initiated an early parliamentary election in the country.

Also, Merz's failure caused the collapse of the German stock market.
