The poisoning is believed to have been caused by a combination of taking dietary supplements with vitamin D3 and prolonged sun exposure.

Experts note that people often start taking supplements uncontrollably on recommendations from social networks, without consulting doctors. This is reported by the British tabloid The Mirror.

"This is a fat-soluble vitamin that accumulates in the fatty tissue of the body and is not easily excreted. If taken in excess, it can cause poisoning. Excess can alter calcium levels, leading to serious kidney or heart damage," said Maria Pastor, a hormone and vitamin specialist at Son Espases Laboratories.

Symptoms of vitamin D3 poisoning can include: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, abdominal discomfort or even confusion. All these symptoms are associated with hypercalcemia - excess calcium in the bloodstream.
