On Oct. 29,the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted emergency approval to administer a smaller dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine to children aged 5-11.
Acting FDA Commissioner Janet Woodcock said parents, caregivers, school personnel and children were waiting for approval. Vaccination for young children will bring the U.S. closer to a return to normalcy.
A comprehensive and thorough evaluation of the vaccine's safety data should help convince parents that the drug meets high standards.
Pfizer officially submitted a request for approval of its vaccine for children in a dosage of 1/3 of the adult dose (10 micrograms) on Oct. 7. The vaccine is already approved for those over the age of 12.
