Japan has identified the first person infected with a new strain of the Omicron coronavirus.
Kyodo news agency, citing a government source, reported that the new variant COVID-19 was confirmed in a Namibian diplomat. The Omicron strain was detected in him during testing at Narita Airport near Tokyo.
The country's authorities, amid the emergence of the Omicron strain, decided to restrict entry into the state for all foreigners. The ban came into force from November 30. This emergency measure will be in effect until all the details about the new version of COVID-19 become clear.
The Omicron strain was first found in South Africa.
