Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has admitted that the ruling Justice and Development Party failed to achieve the desired results in the past municipal elections.
Local government elections were held in Turkey on Sunday, March 31. The opposition Republican People's Party beat the ruling Justice and Development Party for the first time in two decades after nearly 90 percent of the votes were counted, state TV channel TRT Haber reported.
In addition to Istanbul, Ankara and Antalya, which have been ruled since 2019, new cities, including the industrial centers of Bursa and Tekirdag, have also fallen under opposition control.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in his first speech after the elections that the ruling Justice and Development Party failed to achieve the desired results in municipal elections nine months after winning the May 2023 vote.
According to the head of state, the ruling party will analyze the results of the elections showing the failures on the ground.
