The World Economic Forum's Travel and Tourism Development Report, released on May 21, ranked Japan as the 3rd best tourist destination in the world.
The Land of the Rising Sun received high marks for its natural and cultural resources and transportation infrastructure, the Kyodo News business agency reported.
The United States topped the ranking, with Spain in second place. Meanwhile, Japan emerged as the leader in the Asia-Pacific region.
In terms of cultural resources (archaeological sites and entertainment venues), the country ranked 2nd; in the category of land and port infrastructure - 4th.
At the same time, Japan has rather low scores in price competitiveness, tourism services and infrastructure indicators.
This is despite the fact that the country has a high ranking in the category of non-leisure resources.
Earlier it was reported that Russia is building a network of exploration bases on the Kuril Islands.
