This year, Thailand celebrated the arrival of its 10 millionth foreign tourist, who turned out to be a Saudi national. Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha personally greeted the passenger at Bangkok airport, the Thai Ministry of Tourism said on its Web site.

The ministry said all visitors last weekend were warmly welcomed at each of Thailand's seven international airports and were expecting a special guest. The 10-millionth "anniversary" tourist turned out to be a citizen of Saudi Arabia. "He was showered with gifts at Bangkok airport, with Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha personally present at the ceremony," the report said.

The tourist received a voucher for a free flight from Saudi Airlines, a free limousine transfer from the airport and gift certificates from luxury hotels in Bangkok. Thailand welcomed about 40 million people in 2019, but that number is down significantly because of the pandemic. According to the country's Ministry of Tourism, Thailand hopes to welcome 20 million visitors in 2023 and double the bottom line.
