The inhabitants of the village of Cuninico, located in the Amazon rainforest, detained ships crossing the Marañón River. Thus, the Indians managed to capture about 150 people, including tourists from Spain, Great Britain, the United States, Switzerland and France.

During the negotiations the demands related to the rupture of the pipeline of the state company Petroperu were voiced. In particular, 2.5 thousand tons of oil got into the river because of the accident. The accident happened at the end of September, but its consequences were not eliminated.

After the authorities assured that the problem would be solved, the Indians let the hostages go.

Note that there are 2,500 indigenous people living in Cuninico.
