The team's players defied the leaders of the Iranian regime by wearing a black jacket without a logo or coat of arms during the national anthem. The scene took place Sept. 27 in Austria, before a friendly match against Senegal (1-1).

The players were protesting the ongoing repression in their country. Thousands of people have been demonstrating since Sept. 14 and over the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman arrested in Tehran by the vice police for not adhering to the dress code imposed by the Islamic Republic of Iran. She was accused of wearing the hijab in an "inappropriate manner".

Since 1979, Iranian women have been required to wear the hijab, a headscarf covering their hair and leaving their face visible. Violators are fined and face imprisonment and flogging. This treatment has become unbearable for the population, which has been expressing its indignation in the streets for several years, despite the harsh repression of the law enforcement.
