South American teams have refused to play in the World Championships every two years

The Confederation of South American Soccer has published the results of a meeting whose main topic was the option of playing World Cups every two years.

Recall that earlier, FIFA President Gianni Infantino sent a draft calendar to the football federations, in which the World Cup will be held every two years, starting in 2026.

At the same time, the number of matches in the qualifying rounds was proposed to be reduced to seven, and the games themselves should be held in one month - October.

More than 16 federations from different countries have spoken out against this idea. These included the states of CONMEBOL.

"There is no reason, advantage or justification for the changes promoted by FIFA. In this regard, the ten countries that are members of CONMEBOL have ratified that they will not participate in the FIFA World Cup held every two years," the statement said.

The statement also notes that the South African national teams support the current World Cup with its timing and regulations.

CONMEBOL consists of the national teams of Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Venezuela, Colombia, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Chile and Ecuador.
