According to L'Equipe, the main reason was the player's interview, in which he said that the French Basketball Federation knew about his transfer to the Russian club, but said no for the sake of having him in the squad at the European Championship in 2022. After this statement, the national team refused the services of the basketball player.

Earlier, the French Basketball Federation demanded all players of the national team to sign an agreement, under the terms of which they can not play for clubs from Russia, and otherwise will be excluded from the national team. Ertel signed the document, but still violated his agreement. Apparently, the national team decided to meet him and themselves, but for some reason the basketball player let it slip.

The Olympic Games in Paris will be held from July 26 to August 11. Russians and Belarusians will be able to perform at individual competitions of the tournament in a neutral status if a number of conditions are met.
