Elena Yushina, a Russian track and field athlete specializing in long jump, was attacked during a training camp in the town of Pochefstroom in the Republic of South Africa. The incident occurred when the athlete was jogging alone and an unknown man attacked her from behind.
The attacker punched the runner in the face, causing her to fall to the ground. He then stole her smartphone and fled, leaving the athlete with facial injuries, including a split lip and numerous abrasions.
The athlete's coach, Olympic champion Sergei Klyugin, confirmed the attack, but fortunately noted that serious injuries such as concussion or fractures were avoided. According to Klyugin, despite the shock, Elena, being a “fighter” by nature, returned to training the next day. Nevertheless, as a precautionary measure, she was advised to temporarily give up jogging in the city and conduct all training exclusively in the stadium.
