Family members of the famous German soccer player and coach Franz Beckenbauer told in an interview with Spiegel the details of his death. According to relatives, it happened on January 7. Beckenbauer died in his sleep, surrounded by relatives.

During his soccer career Beckenbauer became world champion with the German national team in 1974. As a player of Bayern Munich, he won the UEFA Cup three times and the Cup Winners' Cup once.
Beckenbauer twice won the Golden Ball. And under his leadership, the German national team won the World Cup in 1990.
