The U.S. State Department has taken away the citizenship of a 61-year-old Washington-born doctor with Iranian roots.
According to The Washington Post, Siyawash Sobhani has lived, studied and practiced medicine in the United States for more than 30 years. However, when he tried to renew his passport at the State Department, it was discovered that his U.S. citizenship had been granted in error at birth. The reason was that his father was an Iranian diplomat, which under the laws of the time precluded automatic citizenship.
Sobhani expressed his surprise and incomprehension at the agency's decision. He emphasized his deep affection for the United States, noting his years of contributions through taxes, active participation in elections, and service to the people of Northern Virginia. The doctor also noted his active work during the COVID-19 pandemic, where he risked his and his family's health by staying on the front lines of the medical fight against the virus.
According to WP, Sobhani has applied for permanent residency. Despite this, he is uncertain as to when his case will be processed. In this regard, the doctor has already spent about 40 thousand dollars on legal fees waiting for a resolution.
We shall remind you that earlier the speaker of the US House of Representatives told about the fate of the aid package to Ukraine and Israel.
