The Swiss also voted to increase the value-added tax.
Switzerland held a referendum on pension reform. The RTS television station, which counted the votes live, reported that the Swiss approved of raising the retirement age for women from 64 to 65, and also agreed that the value-added tax should be increased.
"Women will work until age 65, just like men. Citizens approved of both elements of pension reform. Raising the retirement age for women was ultimately supported by 50.6 percent of voters, while increasing VAT was supported by 55.1 percent," the channel reported.
Raising the retirement age for Swiss women will be gradual. It will begin to raise it in 2025 and finish the reform in 2028.
The Swiss government says the measure will save 4.9 billion francs in pension funds by 2032. And the increase in VAT will replenish the fund by 12.4 billion francs. But the experts believe that this will only allow closing the gaps in the country's economy for 10 years. The pension reform will continue in the future.
