Earlier in Paris, several high-speed train lines suffered major disruptions, including a line linking Paris and London via a tunnel under the English Channel. SNCF CEO Jean-Pierre Farandou said the disruptions affected about 800,000 passengers. He also noted that the problems may persist for the rest of the week while repair work is underway.
According to AFP, the disruptions were caused by sabotage. A BFM TV source specified that signal cabinets were damaged and cables were cut along the tracks on three lines of high-speed trains.
Farandou and French Transport Minister Patrice Vergriete said it was a “coordinated malicious action.” Incendiary devices were found at the scenes and an investigation is underway, the Transportation Ministry chief said.
The opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Paris is scheduled for 19:30 local time (20:30 Moscow time).
