UNESCO names number of countries without coronavirus vaccine

The number of countries where no nationals have yet been vaccinated against the coronavirus exceeds 130.

The announcement was made by UNESCO Director-General Audre Azoulay on 24 February.

"The world is breathing a sigh of relief following the announcement of the launch of vaccination campaigns against COVID-19. Without solidarity, we are far from meeting the target, with over 130 countries yet to receive a single dose of vaccine and the most vulnerable nations not yet protected," she added.

At the same time, some developed countries have been able to provide sufficient vaccine doses to their citizens, leaving "developing countries far behind", emphasized UNESCO. If this trend continues, developing states will not be able to get the vaccine until 2022, said Azoulay.

"Equitable distribution of vaccines is not just the right thing to do, but the best way to control the pandemic, restore confidence and reboot the global economy," the UNESCO press office quoted WHO chief Tedros Adanom Gebreyesus as saying.
