State Duma passes law banning LGBT propaganda and gender reassignment in Russia

Penalties for violating the law will be up to 10 million rubles.

The State Duma passed a law banning LGBT propaganda among minors and adult citizens of the Russian Federation

The law on LGBT propaganda, pedophilia and sex reassignment was passed by the Russian State Duma in its third reading, according to the website of the Russian State Duma.

On November 24, the law, which provides for criminal liability among other things, was passed in its final third reading. The authors of the amendments were the heads of all factions, about 300 deputies, led by Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin. The document was supported unanimously.

The law prohibits the promotion of non-traditional sexual relationships, relationships with minors, as well as the dissemination of information that may cause a desire to change sex. This applies to the media, the Internet, books and films and applies not only to minors, but also to adult citizens of Russia.

Films with the relevant propaganda will not receive distribution certificates, and minors will also be restricted from access to paid services with LGBT content.

The text also includes a clause on the prohibition of information that can encourage teenagers to change their sex.

Roskomnadzor will receive broader powers to access materials on the Internet to search for prohibited information.
