An image of a rodent's optic nerve won first place in the Nikon Small World competition

The work was evaluated by a panel of experts on various indicators, including technique, visual impact, information content and originality of the shot.

An image of a rodent's optic nerve has won first place in the Nikon Small World microphotography competition.

Its authors are Hassanain Kambari and Jayden Dixon, who work at the Lions Eye Institute in Australia. The work was evaluated by a group of experts on various indicators, including technique, visual impact, information content and originality of the frame.

In second place is a photo of a match igniting by Ole Bilfeldt from Germany.

Third place went to breast cancer cells from Polish independent holistic health consultant Malgorzata Lisowska. 

The competition has been running since 1975 and is open to those who take pictures with a microscope.
