India had 1.417 billion people by the end of 2022, World Population Review (WPR) experts found. This is 5 million more than in China, where official figures say the population is 1.412 billion.
As Bloomberg notes, the UN previously predicted that India would overtake China and become the world's population leader. According to WPR on January 18, India's population grew to 1.423 billion people.
The publication notes that India did not provide official population figures. India normally conducts a census once every 10 years but decided to postpone it in 2021 because of the pandemic.
As for China, its population decreased by 850,000 people to 1,411,750,000 in 2022. These data are contained in the State Statistical Office of the PRC. It should be noted that the reduction of China's population occurred for the first time since the 1960s.
