The whaling season has opened on the eastern coast of Chukotka, and the sea zookeepers managed to catch one of the animals, which exceeds 13 meters in length, reports “IA Chukotka”.
According to the portal, the whale hunt was led by members of the local community “Sireniki”, who went to sea on three fishing boats.
Community chairman Valery Kavaugye said that the hunt began around lunchtime on Saturday, and by Friday morning a whale was brought to the village. It was a large gray whale with a length of 13.1 meters.
According to the established quotas, the region's fur sealers are allowed to harvest another 129 gray whales. This quota was allocated by the Chukotka authorities.
Earlier on Sakhalin, hunters for the red-listed delicacy were caught red-handed and searches were conducted, which resulted in several shipments of trepang prepared for sale.
