The Federal Service for the Oversight of Consumer Protection and Welfare (Rospotrebnadzor) reported the appearance of tropical bedbugs in Russia.
"Tropical bedbugs appeared in a number of Russian cities. They can be seen in ordinary dwellings, as well as in five-star hotels. This species is new for the European part of Russia, " the Rospotrebnadzor said.
The department said that bedbugs can exist in premises that are kept in proper sanitary conditions. However, insects can most often be found in residential buildings with a high population density, as well as in premises with poor sanitation.
Tropical bedbugs most often enter houses along with furniture, clothes or other things. Bedbugs also know how to move to a new "place of residence" from other apartments through ventilation and sockets. "If bedbugs get into at least one apartment, there is a risk of their spread throughout the house," Rospotrebnadzor reminded.
The department reported the need to check beds in hotels before settling. If bedbugs are found in the room, it is necessary to notify the administration in order to eliminate pests.
If the insects are not visible to the naked eye, they can be found in the traces of bites on the human body. Tropical bed bugs are activated in the summer and in the heating season, and can also attack a person in the daytime.
Rospotrebnadzor recommends often changing bedding, regularly cleaning an apartment using a vacuum cleaner and disinfectants, as well as monitoring the condition of furniture. Bedbugs leave behind dark spots, as well as bloody traces on the bed. In order not to bring insects from a business trip or vacation, it is best to store personal belongings in the bathroom because they cannot move on slippery surfaces.
Besides, dirty things are not recommended to be stored on the floor during the trip. They need to be folded into a tightly tied bag, and upon returning it is important to heat treat the things or to give them to dry cleaning.
In Moscow, the appearance of tropical bedbugs was already talked in August 2019.
