Russian Union of Travel Industry explained mass seizure of passports at the border

In recent months, the number of cases of seizure of passports with errors at the border has increased significantly. This was reported by Dmitry Gorin, vice-president of the Russian Union of Travel Industry, noting that an “avalanche-like” increase in such incidents became noticeable especially in May and June.

Georgy Mokhov, head of the Russian Union of Travel Industry Legal Affairs Committee, added to RBK that earlier tourists with passports containing discrepancies were still allowed to cross the border and then advised to replace the documents upon their return.

However, with the entry into force of new rules of entry and exit from Russia in December 2023, typos in passports became a sign of their invalidity. According to Mokhov, the change in the legal situation has led to passports now being confiscated.

The Russian Foreign Ministry urged travelers to check the data and expiration dates of foreign passports before starting a vacation. The ministry also reminded that if there are errors in the documents, they can be replaced free of charge.

Earlier, the authorities of the Vladimir region told how they would develop tourism in the region, and tourists were warned about the danger of terrorist attacks in Turkey, Thailand and Egypt.
