El Niño could heat the Earth to record temperatures, climatologist Alexei Kokorin said.
The El Niño phenomenon may last another year, then 2024 will break the temperature record on Earth and become the hottest in the history of observations, said climatologist Alexei Kokorin in a conversation with RIA Novosti.
He noted that El Niño is likely to last until April 2025.
The expert recalled that this phenomenon began in May last year and lasts until now. According to him, El Niño most often lasts about two years. According to this, Kokorin believes that El Niño will last about 12 more months, and the current year will break the record for the temperature on the planet, if there are no strong volcanic eruptions that cause a cooling effect.
The climatologist added that there have been no eruptions with sulfate aerosol drifting into the stratosphere on Earth for the past 33 years.
Kokorin emphasized that the weather in Russia will be affected by El Niño "extremely weakly" or not at all, even in Primorye.
Earlier, Roman Vilfand, a researcher at the Russian Hydrometeorological Center, said that Russia would not experience a record-breaking hot summer.
