Federal security service will clean up Arctic with prisoners’ hands

The Ministry has already reached an agreement with the authorities of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, and the first centre will appear in Norilsk. There are plans to do the same in the Arkhangelsk region.

The Federal Penitentiary Service has reached an agreement with the authorities of the Krasnoyarsk Territory to involve convicts in the clean-up of the Arctic zone. This was announced by Elena Korobkova, head of the Federal Penitentiary Service's department for the organization of execution of punishments not involving isolation from society, TASS reported.

It is assumed that the convicts will live in "mobile modular structures" while working in the Arctic. Norilsk has already provided a building to create a correctional centre on its basis, which could accommodate 56 people. The centre will be commissioned in November this year.

A similar facility may also appear in the Arkhangelsk region.

The engagement of convicts to forced labour has been practiced in Russia since 2017. People live in dormitories, perform work that does not require special qualifications, and receive a salary not lower than the minimum wage.
