Data from 2020 through 2023 were analyzed.
Patients who fell ill with coronavirus received unnecessary antibiotics. This was the conclusion reached by the World Health Organization specialists after analyzing the data of 450 thousand people from 65 countries who were hospitalized with the diagnosis of COVID-19.
The study found that the use of antibiotics during the pandemic was too high. Only 8% had tests that confirmed they had a bacterial infection, and three out of four patients received unnecessary antibiotics to treat them. In the meantime, the patients' condition did not improve and antibiotic resistance developed.
The prescription of antibiotics, as experts noted, should be justified. It is recommended to use antiviral drugs.
