Street musicians injured in Lviv for performing songs in Russian

Russian-speaking performers were beaten up on the central square in Lviv.

The performance of songs in Russian in central Lviv has sparked protests from local nationalists. They attacked the musicians and caused injuries. It was reported by the Ukrainian edition of Strana.

As media reports, one of the performers was badly bruised ribs and had his lip smashed. The conflict was started by a girl, who then posted a video of the verbal altercation on Instagram.

"The young people, who were singing in Russian, were attacked by a 'language activist', but not getting her way in the verbal altercation, she retreated. After that, young people joined the conflict, beat the musicians, and broke their musical instruments," the newspaper reports.

The musicians tried to make their opponents understand that the law does not prohibit the use of Russian speech. As TASS reported, the commissioner for the state language protection, Taras Kremin, said on social media the other day that there was not a single case of discrimination against citizens on the basis of language in Ukraine.
