Panamanian authorities approve use of Sputnik V

The Panamanian authorities have approved the emergency use of the Russian vaccine against the coronavirus Sputnik V in the republic.

"We have carefully studied the information about the drug and concluded that it meets all the requirements in force in our country," Elvia Lau, a spokeswoman for Panama's Ministry of Health, told Telemetro TV.

She added that the country's authorities had issued a permit for the emergency use of the Russian vaccine Sputnik V.

According to Lau, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Health of Panama are already working on the issue of purchasing the drug.

The Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) has confirmed this information, specifying that the registration has been carried out under an accelerated procedure.

Kirill Dmitriev, CEO of RDIF, stressed that the decision of Panamanian authorities to approve Sputnik V will ensure access to "safe and effective Russian vaccine" for Panamanian population.

There are 4.2 million people in Panama, according to official figures. Since the start of the pandemic more than 355,000 COVID-19 cases have been diagnosed there. More than six people have become victims of the new virus. A vaccination campaign has been under way in the country since 20 January.
