During the study of the sewage system of the Colosseum, scientists found the remains of snacks of spectators.
In the sewers of the Colosseum there are remnants of snacks that are 1,900 years old. They were discovered by archaeologists from the University of Liverpool during excavations that began here in 2021.
Thus, robots exploring the sewage system found fragments of figs, grapes, cherries, blackberries and walnuts. In addition, the bones of bears and big cats were found in the sewer.
Among other things, archaeologists found 50 bronze coins belonging to the late Roman period, a silver coin dating from 170-171 AD. It was in use during the reign of Emperor Marcus Aurelius.
Scientists also told us that the remains of small dogs that looked like dachshunds were found in the sewers. These dogs were less than 30 cm tall and had elongated bodies. Scientists believe that the dogs may have acted as animal acrobats and participated in mock hunts.
