The results of the study were published in the British Medical Journal. The article reports that scientists divided nearly 26,000 U.S. citizens aged 50 and older into two groups, giving them either vitamin D supplements or a placebo. The researchers tracked the development of autoimmune diseases in those observed for five years.

As a result, they found that an increased dose of 2,000 IU of vitamin D per day reduced the development of autoimmune diseases by 22%. The standard dose of 400 IU recommended by health organizations did not have this effect.

The researchers also noted that they will continue testing to see how long the effect can last. They said they hope to be able to start a new study in a younger age group.
