The Sun is on the threshold of the next peak of activity, during which it is expected to increase the number of solar flares and, as a consequence, the occurrence of geomagnetic storms.
The Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences has reported that a new peak in solar activity is expected from 2024 to 2026. According to Roman Vasilyev, deputy director of the institute, this will lead to new solar flares, and thus geomagnetic storms.
During this period on Earth can be observed polar lights, which are often visible even at unusually low latitudes. At the same time, he noted that they can be observed in the southern regions due to changes in the trajectory of the Earth's magnetic pole.
Also astrophysicist emphasized that during the peak of solar activity on Earth can be observed violations in the work of short-wave radio communication and satellite navigation. He also noted that railroads or telecommunication lines are at risk.
Recall, May 10, the Earth experienced the strongest magnetic storm. In total, three solar mass ejections hit the Earth. However, experts believe that we should prepare for another geomagnetic storm.
