Coronavirus quarantine reduces air pollution by 20%

NASA scientists are amazed at the effect of lockdown on the atmosphere.

After the introduction of restrictive measures around the world related to the coronavirus pandemic, residents of large cities could note an improvement in air quality. NASA scientists decided to accurately calculate what effect quarantine had on the Earth's atmosphere. It turned out that since the beginning of the year, pollution has reduced by 20%.

The data showed that the global level of nitrogen dioxide in the atmosphere fell by 20%. This means that after lockdowns around the world, the release of industrial and transport pollution from fuel combustion also fell.

The authors of the study noted that the effect of quarantine on the air shocked them. The head of the team of scientists, Christoph Keller, noted that the results clearly show that despite the great work of many countries to reduce nitrogen dioxide emissions, there is still a very large contribution related to human activities.
