A group of scientists from Russia and China has figured out how to double the yield of rice. The joint scientific work of specialists from Samara National Research University named after S. P. Korolev and the Chinese University of Earth Sciences and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University was published in the journal Advances in Space Research.

Multispectral satellite imaging is proposed for this purpose. It can be used to determine the mineral composition of the soil and the light and moisture regime in any area.

This approach will help to find the best areas for planting rice, as well as to select the optimal regime of irrigation and fertilization of crops, say the scientists.

The technology will also help assess plant health and predict yields, in some cases doubling them.
