In Kanchatka, Russians discovered new type of minerals

The find was called «glycinite» - in honor of the famous scientist from St. Petersburg State University.

On the Kamchatka Peninsula, scientists from St. Petersburg managed to discover a new mineral, called "glycinite." This name was given to the find in honor of the doctor of geological and mineralogical sciences Arkady Glikin from St. Petersburg State University.

According to experts, glycinite (Zn3O(SO4)2) found on the Tolbachik volcano is anhydrous zinc oxysulfate, which is very interesting, since anhydrous sulphates have never been found in this area before. Glycinite is also a fairly unusual mineral, since it cannot be reproduced in laboratory conditions.

Oleg Siidra, the head of the St. Petersburg scientific group who commented on the find, noted that glycinite had already become the fourth new mineral that they had managed to detect in Kamchatka since 2018. The previous three, according to him, were Germannite, Maislanite and White Sow.
