Scientists have discovered a potential new variant of coronavirus in the sewers

Researchers from New York have identified a new variant of covid in city wastewater. Express, citing scientists, writes that the virus resembles an «omicron», which can cause an outbreak of a new strain of COVID-19.

As explained, the discovered samples of the new virus were designated as WNY1, WNY2, WNY3 and WNY4. They are united with the active “omicron” by the structure of the receptor-binding domain: due to mutations in it, the “omicron” can avoid the effects of antibodies.

"... The new strain could 'find' mutations that would also make it highly contagious," said John Dennehy, co-author of the study at the City University of New York.

However, at the same time, experts believe that at the moment it is too early to declare the danger of a new strain, which in fact may become more dangerous to health than Omicron or Delta.
