Employees of St. Petersburg State University of Industrial Technologies and Design, Institute of Chemical Physics RAS and Institute of High Molecular Compounds RAS have developed a biodegradable packaging technology that includes larch fibers.

"We discovered that arabinogalactan introduced into synthetic polymers gives them biodegradability properties. The substance "opens the door" for microbes that are in the soil to "pass" into the plastic and contribute to its decomposition," said Professor Eduard Akim of SPbGUPTD.

Arabinogalactan is a special substance found in larch trees.

When adding this substance, synthetic polymers that are part of the plastic will help speed up the decomposition of packaging in nature. Thus, microbes from the soil will be able to penetrate the plastic and destroy it.
