Some 1,500 ivory fragments, formerly inlaid into decorative plates and dating back to the Iron Age, were discovered Monday, Sept. 5, by Israeli archaeologists in Jerusalem, the first historical find of its kind in the Holy City, Le Figaro reported.

"Such objects are usually found in royal palaces, indicating the great wealth and prosperity of the place," said archaeologist Reli Avisar. The discovery is of historical significance because in the 8th century ivory was one of the most valuable commodities, more valuable than gold.
