In order to support the cognitive functions of the brain and retain memory, it is necessary to eat properly. Thus, according to scientists from Columbia University, the diet should be rich in foods containing flavonols, writes the journal PNAS. They are found in apples, onions, sea buckthorn, tea, red wine and dark chocolate.

The claim is based on a study involving a thousand elderly people divided into two groups. The observation of them lasted for three years. Scientists monitored their cognitive health along with a special diet considering 500 ml of flavonols per day.

The second group followed a diet with a placebo effect.

The results of the experiment showed that in the group where flavonols were taken daily, the participants' memory improved by 16% from the beginning of the experiment.
