Scientists have discovered the fastest-moving crack in Antarctica's ice sheet

The crack was found on the Pine Island ice shelf.

A crevasse has been found on the Pine Island Ice Shelf in Antarctica that is moving at 128.7 kilometers per hour. It is the fastest moving crack ever discovered by scientists.

It is 10.5 kilometers long.

"According to our data, this is the fastest fracture formation event ever recorded," notes the study's lead author Stephanie Olinger in a paper published in the journal AGU Advances.

Scientists suggest that under certain conditions, the glacier could collapse. At the same time, they remind that Pine Island, is responsible for about 25% of ice loss in the region.

Now they plan to monitor the process of formation of the crack to find out how it will affect the sea level and the stability of the ice shelf.

It was previously reported that a powerful El Niño, which influenced the waters of the Pacific Ocean with its warmth from 1939 to 1942, triggered the melting of the huge Antarctic Pine Island Glacier.

Also, Julia Wellner, professor of geology at the University of Houston, spoke about the danger of further melting of the Thwaites Glacier. Scientists have repeatedly reported about the rapid melting of the Tuyts Glacier.
