On July 29, 2022, our planet made a complete revolution slightly faster - 1.59 milliseconds shorter than 24 hours. Thus, this day on Earth became the shortest in the history of observations.

The previous record was set on July 19, 2020. Then the Earth made a revolution around its axis by 1.47 milliseconds faster than the full 24 hours. Since then, the Earth has begun to pick up speed.

Naturally, we do not feel such deviations in our daily lives. However, it can affect satellites and navigation systems. For example, with an error of 0.5 milliseconds, GPS is wrong by 26 centimeters when determining a specific point.

The cause of such deviations, according to experts, may be the so-called "Chandler wobble" - the slowing down of the rotation of the Earth around its axis. There are other factors affecting the rotation rate of the planet: melting glaciers and decreasing pressure on the poles, movement of the planet's inner core and seismic activity.
