Chinese embassy spokesman Liu Pengyu said that Washington should immediately stop all intentions to supply arms to Taiwan. He said the White House's decision to ask the U.S. Congress to approve the $1.1 billion arms sale to Taipei is unacceptable and violates the One China principle.

Pengyu said there is a joint communiqué between the U.S., China and Taiwan and now it is being violated. Separatists who advocate "Taiwan independence" are receiving support from U.S. politicians, which has inflamed tensions in the Taiwan Strait.

"The U.S. side must immediately stop arms sales and military contacts with Taiwan, stop creating a situation that could lead to tensions in the Taiwan Strait, and [the White House needs to] follow the U.S. government's statement that it does not support 'Taiwan independence,'" said Liu Pengyu, a spokesman for the Chinese Embassy in Washington.
