On February 8, 2010, then acting Russian President Dmitry Medvedev submitted the candidacy of Natalia Komarova for the post of the head of the region to the deputies of the Duma of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug. At an extraordinary meeting on February 15, the deputies unanimously approved her candidacy. On September 13, 2015 and September 13, 2020, Komarova was re-elected as governor of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug.
