President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko spoke about the upcoming change of power in the country. The head of state refuses to give the Constitution to a «stranger.»
"Today, a stranger cannot be given the current Constitution. The basic law gives too much power to the president, and if a stranger becomes a new leader, there will be trouble. I am a supporter of the adoption of the new Constitution," Alexander Lukashenko said during a meeting with the staff of the 6th Minsk City Clinical Hospital.
The Belarusian leader noted that in his country, as well as in Kazakhstan and Russia, "the most stringent constitutional laws" are in force, giving the president powers on which "everything depends." "God forbid a man will come who wants to start a war under the current basic law. We need a new Constitution, but such that the country does not collapse in the future," Alexander Lukashenko said.
The current vertical of power "will keep the country from collapse," the president of Belarus emphasized. "The main blow falls on the president and the vertical of power. We passed this under Mikhail Gorbachev, when we elected the heads of enterprises and directors. So, the country was lost, the USSR was ruined, and now they want to throw this sweetheart to us, "said Alexander Lukashenko.
Opposition forces do not support the proposed model of the Constitution, hoping to "get a strong president." "They need a president with current power, they do not need any Constitution and changes. If we adopt a new basic law, there will be a dispersion of power," Alexander Lukashenko emphasized.
Nevertheless, the Belarusian leader assured that he would not act as president under the new Constitution.
