They will assume their duties in the fall.
EU leaders at the Brussels summit have approved the previously proposed candidates for the top posts in the European institutions, European Council President Charles Michel said on social media.
Former Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa took over as head of the European Council. Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas became the EU's high representative for foreign policy and security.
Ursula von der Leyen remained for a second term at the head of the European Commission.
Kallas will be able to take up her duties in October.
Costa said he will take office on Dec. 1.
Von der Leyen still has to pass the voting procedure in the European Parliament, which will be held on July 16. At least 361 deputies of the EP of the new convocation must vote for her. After that, von der Leyen will present the new composition of the EC in September.
Earlier, the candidate to the EP compared the anti-Russian statements of the head of the EC with the words of Hitler.
